Returned to work at the charity shop, and what did I see but these dolly pegs.
They are used for arts and crafts, and were invented by the Shakers, who were credited with inventing the washing machine, packaged seeds and the clothes pegs. Who knew.
The pegs were often made from willow, as the wood was springy.
Children all those years ago didn’t have the range of toys we see today, and the pegs enabled them to make their own dolls.
My memory is of a gypsy lady knocking on the door selling these pegs. What a pleasant change from plastic.
