Whilst watching the local news last night I discovered that fifty years ago the Queen Mary left Southampton for the last time before her new life began on Long Beach, America.
My dad spent many years working on the Queen Mary but he was not aboard for the final journey,
I remember where I was. I was in tears on the Isle of Wight ferry leaving Southampton, my family and friends, for a new life on the Island. It seemed to be appropriate that I was in tears and then in the distance the Queen Mary steaming off.
I know she has had quite a difficult time settling into her new role as a tourist attraction, and with the extra worry of having to raise lots and lots of money to keep her in tip top condition.
As the Queen, my life on the Island was up and down, good and bad.
Unfortunately I didn’t end up in the sunshine with lots of visitors.
